It took everything within Max to keep all information regarding the shot he received hidden behind a thick mental wall, which did, in fact, change him. He should've known Kitana would notice differences that no one else picked up. He stood beneath the spray and turned up his face. Hot water pelted his skin, reminding him of the comment regarding his body temperature.

“Thomas?” He reached out through their mental link.

“Max? Is everything alright?” While Thomas understood Max's need to be with Kitana, he was also concerned with the military guys on board. Later, he and Kitana would talk with Alfred and Jean to determine a plan of action.

“Yeah, it's all good. Question. Did the shot change our, my, body temperature?”

“I don't know, did it?”

“And my heartbeat? Kitana asked why it beat so fast while we were laying down talking. That doesn't sound right, does it?”

“I don't know. I'll have to look into it. You haven't told her about the shot, have you?”

“No. When will I be able to share that with her?”

“Max, if the two of you aren't remaining with the team, you can never share any of that with her or anyone. This is new territory. Silas may require we alter your memories to keep his secrets safe. I just don't know yet.”

Max appreciated the sorrow and pain in Thomas' voice and understood the sense of loss. It never occurred to him that he would be completely cut off from people he considered family. “I know. You have my word I won't discuss any of that with her. If she's curious about the team, we'll come to you.”

“Thanks. That makes my life a lot easier. I really appreciate it. How's Jean and Alfred?”

“Soon as we boarded the ship she went to her room. I think we're meeting them for dinner.” He inhaled. Food arrived. His stomach rumbled from the tantalizing aroma's sliding into the steam-filled room.

“We're flying to Barcelona in the morning and will meet you guys in a few days when the ship docks. No matter what you decide, we won't leave without saying goodbye. Have fun, relax and don't get caught.”

Max thought of how responsive Kitana had been earlier and a familiar feeling of coming home swamped him. For years he grieved the loss of his best friend and lover without realizing how much he missed her. He loved his friends, considered them family, but Kitana made his life complete. There was no choice, the two of them would stay together no matter where.

“My lady has the pent-house, only two of them on the ship. We don't plan to leave the room, don't really have a reason. If we do, I'll ride on her shoulder or in her pocket, doubt we'll get caught.”

“Good plan. Watch out for Jean, she's fading faster than Alfred. If she leaves first, he'll be right behind her.”

The reminder of Kitana's friends impending death sobered him. “I hate she's going through this. We owe her so much.”

“Which she considers paid in full. The best you can do is make her comfortable and keep her safe.
